New season started with a bang
Needs Further has kicked the season off with a bang, siring a trio of winners today.
Subrising (ex Grisbi’s Run – pictured) rose to the occasion at Sandown after being held up by a riderless Naval Academy in the concluding stages of the race.
The Nigel Blackiston-trained three-year-old filly was well off them at the 400-metre mark but found another gear down the straight, lunging at the line to run down race favourite Let’s Get Down.
At Devonport, Adam Trinder celebrated success with a pair of sprinters by our resident Group 1 sire.
Big John (ex Just Lu) came into the race with two trial wins under his belt and didn’t disappoint, easing down to win by 1.2 lengths. Shortly after, deserved short-priced favourite Sharma’s Last (ex Sharma Magic) won his second on the trot.
Needs Further’s barn mate Alpine Eagle was also to the fore over the weekend.
Former two-year-old Caulfield stakes performer Eye Of The Eagle was back to his best, winning in a near-capacity field at Sandown. Across the border in South Australia, Alpine Flyer also recorded a tidy win, taking her career tally to four.
Congrats to their winning connections – bring on the spring!
