Needs Further quinellas Gold Sovereign Stakes
The dominance of Needs Further’s two-year-olds was to the fore at Launceston today, with his son and daughter quinellaing the race day feature.
Short-priced favourite Needs Sugar (ex Galeocerdo) looked like the winner a long way from home, but Yassy Nishitani-trained The Spirit Of Zero (ex Fuji Spirit) came from the clouds to pip the last start stakes winner at the post.
The success comes off the back of a flurry of winners for Group 1 sire Needs Further and serves as a reminder that his progeny are not to be taken lightly.
“Needs Further is as consistent as they come,” said an ecstatic Rhiannon Whishaw.
“From stakes-winning juveniles, a Champion 3YO through to a Flemington Stakes winner and beyond, he sure knows how to sire a good horse.”
Needs Sugar came into the race off an impressive 3L win in the Listed Elwick Stakes and met her match today.
“He just came for her as many good horses do,” said Rhiannon.
“Both are obviously very talented and the win was certainly sweetened by the fact that we had the pleasure of raising both horses here at Armidale. We couldn’t be happier for their connections!”
The Spirit Of Zero joins Mystical Pursuit and Pateena Arena as Needs Further sired winners of this race and is one of five stakes-winning juveniles by him.
Armidale will offer six yearlings by Needs Further at this month’s Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
