Tasbreeders has welcomed today’s announcement by Racing Minister Jeremy Rockliff that additional funding will be provided to the state’s thoroughbred breeding industry from a Hodgman Liberal Government.
President of Tasbreeders, Jenny Watson, said, “having the government commit funds in the budget was the culmination of years of lobbying efforts. As well as increased prize money announced recently by Tasracing, additional funding for a new breeding incentive scheme is yet another positive step in ensuring that the Tasmanian breeding industry has a bright and prosperous future”.
The government has recognised that breeding horses is an important primary industry in Tasmania and funding a grants program will allow the industry to grow further in Tasmania.
Watson highlights the strength of Tasmanian breeders in supplying thoroughbred horses to local, domestic and overseas markets, pointing out that “[Tasmanian breeders] continue to breed horses of the highest calibre, including Group 1 winners Mongolian Khan and Palentino, cult favourite The Cleaner and recent Hong Kong winner Winston’s Lad’
Today’s announcement of the delivery of this government’s election promise is wonderful news. I am thrilled that the Liberal government can see the many advantages in assisting Tasmanian breeders to further invest in the local industry, and the flow-on economic benefits from doing so”.
Tasbreeders looks forward to continue to work with Tasracing on further developing the breeder’s incentive scheme.
