What a great start to the new racing season, and what a way to celebrate the horses birthday! QUEENSTOWN (Stratum – Regal Heights) won the first race of the new season at a metropolitan meeting at Hawkesbury today for trainer Gai Waterhouse and a very jubilant sydnicator Denise Martin of Star Thoroughbreds. Denise and Bruce Slade selected the filly from Armidale at the MM Gold Coast Sale last June, and were successful in purchasing her for $60,000. The tall leggy filly has been given plenty of time to mature and she well and truly rewarded her patient owners today with a most impressive debut. Ridden by Tommy Berry the filly jumped to the front and virtually led all the way over 1200m to record a relatively easy win by 21/2 lengths.
Then to top off a wonderful start to the season SAVOIRE VIVRE(GB) sired a double at Morphetville. SAVY SMOKIN’ , bred by the McLeod’s at Camoquhill Stud and sold for $14,000 at the MM Tasmanian Sale in 2007, won by 1.8 lengths over 1600m for trainer Ken Sweeney. Ken then saddled up another SAVOIRE VIVRE in the very next race and he too saluted over 1200m with S Westover in the saddle.
